MEASUREMENT WINDOW

The measurement window, usually found at the bottom of your screen ("show" it from the Window menu), changes depending on the tool and object you've selected. Its various portions tell you what's happening, and allow you to make changes by merely highlighting that which you want to change and typing in your new preference. It is a far handier way to make changes in certain instances than using the menus.

Text

measurement palette

The left half of the window deals with the box, or object, itself: the XY axes represent the element's upper left corner position, in relation to the rulers and their current "0" point.

You can move an element by double clicking on the X or Y and changing it's value

WH represents the size of the selected text (or pix) box. Double click on the dimension you wish to change, type in the new measurement and then enter or return to have your box resized, or reshaped.

The angle icon indicates the angle of the selected box. Negative numbers rotate the element clockwise. Double click the degree, type in a new number and then Enter or Return.

Below the angle is the "columns" number—how many columns are formatted for the current text box (1 in this case). Double click on the number, type in the number of columns desired and then Enter or Return.

The right half of the window deals with the contents of the selected box: the arrows in the boxes correspond to the "flip horizontal" and "flip vertical" commands under the Style menu. Make those modifications here by clicking on the one you want

In the forth box from the left, next to the "flip" arrows, is the leading indicator. In this example, the leading is set to 16 points. Either scroll to a different leading by clicking on the up or down arrows, or highlight the number and change it. Press Return or Enter to affect the change.

Change tracking—below leading—by scrolling, or typing the desired number. Negative numbers represent tighter letter spacing.

To the right are your text alignment choices: flush left, centered, flush right, force justified and justified. Click on the alignment of your choice (your text should be selected first).

The typeface indicator is a pop up menu, as represented by the triangles. Click and hold on the triangle to scroll to the desired typeface. Or, if you know the font name, you can highlight the typeface and begin to type the name of the new one. It will show up automatically, after you've typed just a few letters.

To the right of the typeface indicator is the point size indicator. You can choose from the pop up menu, or double click on the number and type in a new size.

Below the typeface and size are the style choices. Click on as many as you want, to change the appearance of your text.

The little "k" represents small caps, the large "K" represents all caps, the "·2" gives you superscript, "‚2" gives you subscript, and "2" puts your type into superior style, which is tiny type, set up from the baseline.

Pictures

measurement palette

When you are dealing with a picture box, the nature of the window changes to reflect the kinds of manipulations you can perform.

The position and size of your box, reflected by the XY and WH numbers, are handled the same as they would be for a text box.

The angle icon deals with the box and its contents as well, rotating both to the degree you specify here.

The arc symbol allows you to change the nature of the corners of the box to rounded. The pica value here will create round corners of that dimension.

The arrow symbols affect your images the same way as they do for text boxes.

The second set of XY values indicate the size of enlargement or reduction of your image in relation to its original size. You can make a picture smaller or larger than its original size by typing in a percentage in both places. If your percentages in both axes aren't the same, the image will be distorted. Make sure you never enlarge a bit-mapped image in XPress!

Following the scale options are two sets of arrows. These affect the position of the image within the picture box. Use these arrows to nudge the image up, down, left or right.

The X+ and Y+ values also deal with the position of the image within the box. You can move the picture by typing the desired position. This number is relative to the position from the top left corner of the image.

The angle icon to the extreme right of the window deals with the angle of the image, independently from the angle of the box.

The skew icon will slant your image to the degree you type here.

When you are creating lines using the drawing tools, you can adjust it's weight, style, and add any kind of arrows you might need.

You can also select to modify a line using the "style" menu.
